RAF Typhoon FGR4s have joined forces with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the Daesh militant organization, per a report from the British defence ministry.

The site, identified by surveillance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountainous terrain just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in Syria's central region.

"Our fighter planes utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a number of access tunnels providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the operation conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the MoD added.

The British jets were supported by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.

Daesh - alternatively referred to as Daesh - enforced militant control over large swathes of both Syria and Iraq prior to its 2019 collapse.

"This action shows our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with our allies, to eliminate any revival of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey remarked.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted comeback" of the group subsequent to its routing at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank all the members of our armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," the Defence Secretary added. "Including them were a great many British personnel deployed over the holidays. This operation, to eliminate dangerous terrorists who endanger our way of life, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, continuously, protecting the UK within its borders and strong abroad."

Last December, the US military conducted what it termed a "large-scale strike" on IS targets in the country, after an attack claimed the lives of two US servicemembers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has roughly 5-7 thousand fighters in Iraq and Syria.
