People who experienced sexual abuse by church officials have expressed renewed hope after their initial meeting with Pope Leo at the Vatican.

Gemma Hickey, who leads the anti-abuse organization, stated that the pontiff's choice to meet with them so early in his leadership spoke volumes about his dedication to tackling the problem.

Worldwide Zero-Tolerance Policy Pushed

The organization is advocating for a global strict approach that would defrock any clergy member who admits to or is proven of sexually abusing a child. This approach has been implemented in the US.

The Pontiff acknowledged that there is "resistance in certain regions of the globe" to this proposal, according to Hickey.

"We were all being realistic when we acknowledged that there is pushback," Hickey stated.

Legacy Issue

The current pontiff, who assumed the position in May, has inherited this longstanding issue that has haunted the Catholic Church for many years.

Previous efforts to resolve the situation included an historic meeting on paedophilia within the Church and revisions to church laws to clearly outlaw sexual abuse.

Deeply Felt Connection

For the representative, who uses they/them pronouns, the drive for global implementation of the policy is personal. The North American activist revealed they were abused by a clergy member who was later transferred between different parishes.

"We trust this will set the tone for his leadership, because we want to work with him," Hickey expressed. "We have the same goal, we want to end abuse by religious officials."

Significant Encounter

Seven representatives of the organization, which represents survivors and supporters from more than 30 nations, engaged with the Pope in his official residence.

The meeting, initially planned for a brief period, lasted to a sixty minutes, during which the religious leader "mostly listened to us," according to the representative.

The pontiff was described as "quite empathetic" when listening to the story of a female survivor abused at a church-run institution for Indigenous children in North America.

Hickey noted the leader was "tender" about their personal story and seemed "modest, humorous, and approachable."

"Victims have consistently sought a seat at the table and I didn't perceive like he was making empty promises," Hickey stated. "I believed like he was sincere, realistic, and very open and keen to work with us."

Canon Law Reforms

The organization is advocating that changes to church regulations will facilitate the implementation of the zero-tolerance policy globally.

They have consulted specialists and gathered materials that they plan to submit to Pope Leo.

"He appeared engaged in reviewing it," Hickey remarked.

Responsibility Highlighted

A recently released Vatican-commissioned report highlighted the "importance of a streamlined protocol for the stepping down and/or removal of Church leaders or personnel in cases of abuse or failure to act."

The report also noted that victims repeatedly stressed the "critical requirement for bishops and major superiors to be made responsible for inaction and cover-up."

Moving Forward

Hickey shared they told the Pope at the start of their discussion: "This is as much a challenge for him to engage in a conversation as it was for us."

Following the meeting, they voiced hope for progress.

"We understand it's not something that's going to be resolved quickly, but at the conclusion, coming together and building a relationship and continuing to build that relationship is a move in the correct path," Hickey stated.

They added that they shared with Pope Leo: "Even though it's a dark chapter, I feel like we can change how the story concludes - he appreciated that."
