Wimbledon Introduces Video Replay Technology for the First Time.

The Championships court with replay technology

Wimbledon will follow the US and Aussie Opens in implementing video review systems.

Video review technology will be launched at The Championships in the upcoming tournament.

Players will gain the right to challenge certain rulings from the chair umpire, echoing the system currently in place at both the US Open and the Aussie major.

This innovation will be operational on the main stadium and the number one court throughout the tournament and on the remaining show courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This step comes just a season following the All England Club rolled out electronic line calling, which terminated the centuries-old role of line judges.

Reviewable Decisions

Competitors will not be permitted to challenge the call of the ELC system, but they can request the official to re-examine specific decisions, including:

  • Whether a tennis ball has bounced twice.
  • Whether a shot touched an opponent's racquet or person during play.
  • Possible interference at the conclusion of a point.

Notably, there will be an unlimited number on the amount of reviews a player can ask for.

Case in Point

A recent case occurred in a recent tournament recently, where a top player used the review system against Jack Draper.

Draper conceded it was a tough call for the official, but thought his rival had "used the regulations quite well."

Official Aurelie Tourte viewed a replay and determined the player was guilty of hindrance, granting the point to his opponent.

Growing Trend

Video reviews are not new for major tournaments. The system has been in use at the US Open since 2023 and the Aussie Open this year.

Furthermore, it is becoming more common on the WTA circuit, and by next season the ATP circuit plans to have video reviews implemented at every one of its tournaments.

Additional Innovations

A further innovation at The Championships 2025 will be the addition of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the audio calls from the electronic line calling system.

This addresses instances where the crowd have occasionally been unsure if a ball was in or out.

Finally, with exactly 100 days to go until the start of the Championships, organizers have further revealed an expansion in daily attendance at the qualifying competition in the qualifying venue.
